The best thing when The Dig facing a movie is to do it with an eye empty of prejudices and expectations. This is my case with La excavation (The Dig), which, despite looking forward to it, did not have any preconceived ideas regarding it. And, precisely that, I think it has been a plus.
The excavation (The Dig) neither invents anything nor tries, it is a classic tale in every sense. Simon Stone brings his hand and vision from him, which powers the performances of Carey Mulligan and Ralph Fiennes. By the way, they are simply spectacular.
Also, the work of Moira Buffini is more than remarkable, adapting the original novel by John Preston, guilty – I suppose – of the structure of the film. Of its first hour of tension and presentation, and of its second more carefree hour, with its most youthful and loving comics.
Finally, the greatest virtue of the film is that everything inside it makes sense. Everything is at the service of the message of the film, the feeling and its intention, and its wonderful soundtrack is a perfect common thread. The end result is evidence of Stone’s cinematic sense and Mulligan and Fiennes’ natural talent.
Here below I leave a video review that goes into depth in all aspects of the film:
