While many television shows address racial inequality and injustice, perhaps none present these issues better than Chicago P.D. A lot of that has to do with director Eric LaSalle and actor LaRoyce Hawkins, who plays Officer Kevin Atwater, a member of the 21st District Intelligence Unit.
Until the current season, Hawkins, who has been at Chicago P.D since its premiere in 2014, has been the only black cast member to represent an officer within the unit.
Over the years, we have seen his character become more and more important in handling many difficult problems.
In his first season, Atwater was a street cop associated with his fellow officer Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati). In turn, at the end of that Chicago P.D season, he was appointed a member of the Intelligence Unit.
As the only African American officer in the unit, Atwater infiltrates situations the rest of the team cannot. Let’s not forget that for the sixth season of Chicago P.D, some episodes focused on Atwater.
Later that season, in an episode titled “Night in Chicago”, Atwater is undercover and is riding in a car with a suspect. When suddenly the two are stopped by two white policemen and mistreated.
In the end, the suspect was shot and killed and Atwater was arrested, as he did not want to reveal that he was an undercover cop. In turn, Hawkins considered it one of the most powerful and historic stories in the era of police dramas.
